Poor adherence in clinical trials reduces their value by altering estimates of benefits and harms, and wasting time, money and patient experience. Methods for measuring and encouraging adherence are essential components of clinical trials and every effort should be made to incorporate adherence measures in phase II and phase III trials in order to avoid important errors in interpreting benefits and harms.

The paper will be presented and discussed at the Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress in Stockholm, Sweden, 21-24 May 2017.
